If you are a driver, then chances are you have (or will) experience a dead battery at some point. You either have to call for a tow or track someone down to jump start your vehicle (Pro tip: ALWAYS keep a set of jumper cables in your vehicle). Sometimes these things can’t be avoided, but you can prepare yourself with knowledge so you’ll have a better idea of what needs to be fixed.

The battery alone doesn’t start your vehicle. It works in conjunction with the ignition, starter, and alternator. When you put your key into the ignition and turn the switch, the battery converts chemical energy into electrical energy via the starter. The starter sends the message to the engine and it fires up. The alternator works with the battery to keep it charged and to power the electrical systems in your car.

You will notice some unusual signs if you’re battery, starter, and/or alternator need serviced. Obviously, the vehicle won’t start at all, or it will take longer than usual to fire up. The interior and exterior lights may dim in and out, and the digital clock won’t keep time properly. Upon inspection, you may notice corrosion on the battery posts and a sulfuric (rotten egg) odor coming from the area.

There are a few contributors to these warning signs. Your battery is approaching the end of its lifespan or has went beyond its recommended lifespan (typically 3-5 years depending on the type of battery). You have a sound system or other large, electric accessory that is pulling too much power from the battery. The type of climate you live in and your driving habits (frequent short trips) can also weaken your battery.
