Who needs a brand-new vehicle when yours runs just fine? You’ve had that old Honda for nigh on twenty years. You’ve traveled many miles together and seen some amazing things. It has never given up on you . . . until now. You're sitting on the edge of the highway with a large, black cloud billowing from underneath the hood. It’s been acting funny for several weeks now, so you suspect engine trouble (the worst!) and call for help. As to what kind of engine trouble exactly, you don’t know because you know little about them.

Modern vehicles are powered by internal combustion engines which is the large metal contraption approximately in the center beneath the hood. Some components of the engine are as follows: cylinder head, engine/cylinder block, combustion chamber, pistons, valves, crankshaft, camshaft, spark plugs, timing belt/chain etc. Essentially, the valves, pistons, spark plugs and cylinder head work together to ignite small explosions within the combustion chamber. This creates the force that propels your vehicle via the crankshaft. The camshaft and timing belt work together to make sure these components and processes work properly.

If an emergency hasn't brought you to a mechanic, you can utilize your own senses to determine if your engine needs maintenance. One of the more obvious signs of engine trouble is the check engine light on your dash. Yet this doesn’t always mean your engine is about to give out; you may not have screwed the gas cap on tight enough. Other signs could be the car jerking while in motion, clunking and popping noises, unusual smoke, and excessive revving while the vehicle is idle.
